RespawnMonstersUpdated 2026-10-08

What happens when you die: the respawn timer, choosing where to stand up, respawn protection and how to escape a monster.

You lose nothing

Dying in Vaelthorn takes no items, gold or experience. You only lose a little time. Harmful effects (poison, slows) are removed, while blessings and elixirs keep working.

Respawn timer

After death you see a screen with a timer. It grows with your level: 5 s plus 0.3 s per level. The “Fast Return” pass multiplies that time by ×0.5. You can also skip the timer with Dragon Currency.

City or here

When the timer ends, you choose where to stand up:

  • Respawn in the city: back to the city square.
  • Respawn here: right where you died.

If you do not choose within 60 s, the game picks the city.

Exceptions to “here”

  • In a boss dungeon you stand up in front of the dungeon entrance.
  • If you died in water or inside a wall, the game looks for a free spot within 20 studs.
  • Under or outside the map you go to the map’s nearest respawn point.

Respawn protection

You stand up with a single point of health but full mana and energy. For 10 s you take no damage, monsters ignore you and players cannot attack you. Any attack of yours ends the protection at once; healing and buffs do not. Drink a potion before you move on.

Escaping a monster

Monsters guard their place. When you get further than 70 studs from the centre of their group and nobody hits them for 5 s, they go home. Beyond 150 studs they always go home.

  • A returning monster runs faster (×1.25) and does not heal on the way.
  • If it does not get home in 12 s, it appears there.
  • At home it regains 8% of its health per second, but only 4 s after the last hit. Come back quickly and you can finish the fight.
  • Monsters far below your level (15 levels or more) do not attack first.
